In business, willful negligence is rampant. Sometimes it ends with an abrupt, catastrophic “implosion,” as with the Titan. In other cases, the damage is done over a longer period of time – a cancer that grows slowly until it’s too late to turn around. Willful negligence comes in three forms with business owners.
your #1 job is to scale the business profitably. If that’s not your primary responsibility, what is? Doing the technical work? If so, you aren’t a business owner, you’re an employee. Get a job where you get benefits plus three weeks’ vacation and none of the risk and responsibilities that come with running a business.
Except for two very brief periods of my professional career, I’ve been in sales my entire life, my income directly tied to my ability to successfully hunt. As an entrepreneur, this has served me very, very well given the fact that ALL business owners and entrepreneurs are SALESPEOPLE on a “commission plan.” The real question is, are you any good at it?
What are YOU failing to do? To execute on? In business, I talk to small MSPs every day who allow their lack of confidence and fears to hold them back from doing things that will drive the business forward.
The difference between growing, profitable MSPs and ones who aren’t making money is that the latter allow external circumstances to control their outcomes, the former MAKE the circumstances they need. I’m not saying any of this is easy, but it’s far from IMPOSSIBLE.
In business, and all throughout our lives, we all have to make decisions about who we can trust and whose advice to follow. Pick the wrong person and they can impart serious harm. That’s why you must have litmus tests in place to determine who you CAN trust that are designed to reveal the true competence and character of the person you’re about to put your faith in
If I am going to attract and keep the BEST people, it’s MY responsibility to create an organization that is attractive to them in a number of ways. If we want to attract and keep the BEST clients, we need to work at our “irresistible offer.” Here are 5 key “musts” to building your “A Team.”
So often, we don’t give weight to the mundane, daily things we do to at least maintain, if not advance, our situations, focusing on the immediate and urgent instead of thinking, planning and acting for the long term.
Recently, Bud Light attempted to reinvigorate its dying brand by hiring the transgender comedian Dylan Mulvaney to star in one of their ads to celebrate her 365 days of “being a woman.” The backlash was immediate and harsh, with a call for boycotts, and sales reportedly dropping a whopping 30%. I’ve also heard (not verified) that bar sales dropped 50%.
Bottom line, you do NOT have to “just take it” when someone bullies you, threatens you, insults you or criticizes you. You can definitely opt out of toxic, unproductive relationships and survive.
